This popped up on my feed— a throwback from 2019. I’m here with four of my students, preparing to sing at the @hk.kiff opening ceremony.

If you look closely, the children and I are actually laughing about something. I don’t remember what it was, but I think I cracked a joke about all the cameras that were focused on them. (Of course, we all tried to remain as poised!)

You see, having the children perform is not about showcasing their talent to others, but rather for THEM to prove something to themselves— that they are capable of fighting their own fears, that they possess the power to connect with people, and that they have a gift they can use for good.

Most of all, I just want them to have fun, and to believe in themselves. Life will throw them a lot of curve balls in the future, but if they have small moments of triumph in their childhood, these will go a long way in building their storehouses of strength.

I’m proud of every child who goes up on stage… Yes, even the ones who just stand there and seem to “do nothing.”

Because it takes a LOT of courage to go on that stage, and the fact that they “show up” says much about their character— who they are, and who they will choose to be.

I’m ending the week with a #Grateful heart. Children are amazing.
